Board The board is 64 squares alternating between dark and light squares. There is a pretty simple rule when it comes to setting up the pieces and which way the board should face. "light on right" This refers to the different shades of squares.
Where the pieces go The pawns are set up on rows 7 and 2 of oposite colour. On the back rows of each (rows 1 and 8) The set up is pretty simple. Rooks on the outside, then knights next to rooks, bishops next to the king and queen on either side. Remeber the Queen is always on her same colour square. White on White, Dark on Dark. The darker pieces are always referred to as black but they are not always of this colour.
